There's an undeniable allure to venturing out into the winter wilderness. The crisp air, the invigorating chill, and the promise of breathtaking sights create a sense of excitement that is hard to resist. So, with eager anticipation, my girlfriend and I set out on a remarkable winter hike to the captivating Lake Eildon, a hidden gem nestled in North East Victoria's picturesque landscape.
Our adventure began just outside the Devil's Cove campground, at the Merlo Lookout, a vantage point offering a stunning view of the expansive Lake Eildon. A very beautiful sight to inspire your hiking spirit, and we knew right then that we were embarking on a truly unforgettable hike.
Setting off on our day hike around midday, we were greeted by the winter sun casting its warm rays upon the trail. The weather was surprisingly dry and pleasant, with just a gentle winter chill in the air. We started our ascent along the Merlo Lookout track, a winding path that takes you up 1 kilometer in just under a 500 meter elevation gain. The trail was adorned with a diverse array of flora, from vibrant wildflowers to resilient shrubs, creating a beautiful tapestry of colors against the winter landscape. Even a sneaky mushroom or two made their presence known.
As we climbed higher, the panoramic views of Lake Eildon began to unfold, offering glimpses of its tranquil waters through the towering trees. We paused at the Blowhard Summit, perched atop a scenic overlook, to take in the awe-inspiring vistas. The sun-drenched lake sparkled in the distance, inviting us to immerse ourselves in its serene beauty. With the sun warming our faces, we indulged in a delicious meal for lunch.
With renewed energy, we continued our journey along the Blowhard Spur track, which meanders along the tops of the hills. You traverse the path with ease, soaking in the peaceful ambiance of the winter wilderness. Along the way, we encountered fascinating wildlife, from curious birds to agile wallabies, adding an element of delight to our hike.
As the trail led us towards Aird Inlet Track, we marveled at the unspoiled beauty of the surrounding landscape. The shimmering waters of Lake Eildon came into view, reflecting the clear blue sky above. We paused at School Point lookout, a hidden gem that offered a breathtaking view of the lake's expanse. It was a moment of pure bliss, as we stood in awe of nature's grandeur.
Continuing along Wallaby Bay Track, we relished in the tranquil atmosphere and the company of native wildlife. The serene surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for reflection and appreciation of the natural world. We reveled in the simple joy of being immersed in the beauty of the Australian wilderness.
As we made our way to Cook Point, the night began to fall, casting a hazy glow over the surroundings. The moon slowly emerged, casting an ethereal light upon the landscape. It was then, amidst this enchanting scene, that we encountered a sight that defied our expectations. A lightning-fast wombat darted across our path, leaving us in awe of its agility and speed. It shattered the stereotype of wombats as slow, lumbering creatures, and we couldn't help but marvel at the unexpected burst of energy. From that moment on, our perspective shifted, and we realized that nature always has a way of surprising us with its hidden wonders.
Completing the circuit, the last few kilometers were done in the night, guided by the glow of our headlamps. The battery of one of our torches ran out, adding an extra element of excitement as we took turns leading the way along the single track. Laughter filled the air as we navigated the trail in the darkness, cherishing the unique experience that only a winter night hike can provide.
